Lumpectomy or Partial Mastectomy Reconstruction

Lumpectomy or partial mastectomy reconstruction
is a type of mastectomy, which is defined as the removal of breast tissue due to the presence of a cancerous or pre- cancerous growth. The amount of tissue removed during a mastectomy procedure varies and the type of mastectomy that is best for you depends on many factors:

  • The size and stage of your cancer
  • Your particular anatomy
  • Your personal preferences

A lumpectomy is the most conservative surgical procedure. It involves removal of only the tumor itself and the localized swelling. The majority of the breast and its tissues are preserved. These patients also may require radiation treatment.

Quite often, a lumpectomy surgery will produce asymmetry or deformity in the breast shape. This can be reconstructed using a variety of procedures. These procedures include the immediate island latissimus flap, augmentation, reduction mammoplasty and breast lifts. These procedures can be done immediately at the time of your lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, or they can be done at a later time.

Federal law passed in 1998 requires group health plans to cover not only these procedures following breast cancer, but also procedures to the opposite breast to create symmetry.
