Breast Enhancement

Breast reconstructive surgery is done for conditions resulting in defect with history of breast cancer resection or congenital deformity of the breast. Breast enhancement is for the woman who wants to change the shape of her breast depending upon the size and other factors. The major type of breast enhancement surgery includes breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast uplift surgery. Breast augmentation surgery dates back to the 1960’s when breast implants first came on the market. There are four generations of silicone breast implants. The first two generations which were used in the 1960’s and 1970’s are not available now because of problems that occurred with scar tissue formation etc. The third generations of breast implants which come on the market in the middle eighties were better implants, however, in 1992 they were banned from being used in breast enlargement surgery for cosmetic reason. This ban lasted form 1992 to December 2006, when they were released back into the market for breast augmentation surgery. The fourth generation of breast implant surgery which is now being used in European countries and other parts of the world is the Cohesive Gel Implants or so called “Gummy Implants.” In the United States these are only used as part of an FDA study which started in 2001. Dr. Khan has participated in these studies since 2001 and has done over 400 cases. There are two types of cohesive gel implants available in this study monitored by the FDA. One is the Allergan implant which is the 410 implant. This study started in 2001 and the second implant is the contour profile gel implant with is made by Mentor Corporation and started in 2003. Dr. Khan enrolls patients in these studies on weekly bases. The choices now are saline implant, silicone gel implants and cohesive gel implants.

Breast reduction surgery is for patients with large breast that give them considerable degree of symptoms and discomfort. About 60 to 70 percent of patients are covered by their insurance companies and 30 to 40 percent is done for cosmetic reasons. The standard reduction techniques include the pedicle techniques and some people need free nipple grafting. Breast reduction also can be performed in smaller breast using liposuction techniques.

Breast Mastopexies uplifts are for patients who do not have an excessively large size of breast and the breast are sagging. This happens with passage of time, after childbirth or weight gain and loss. The breast lift surgery also consists of crescent type of uplift incision with incision around the nipple areola complex area. The scars are the same as the breast reduction techniques, or inverted T- scar is used for breast uplifting procedures.
