Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Considering a breast lift?
Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. If your breasts are small or have lost volume--for example, after pregnancy--breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.

A mastopexy also repositions and lifts the nipple. It can also help reduce the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple).

Mastopexy with implant
The number of mastopexy procedures in my practice has increased five-fold in the past five years. Some women who have had their implants over the past twenty plus years have had to undergo removal. The revision procedure usually consists of implant replacement or breast tissue uplift i.e., mastopexy. The mastopexy procedure is performed by itself or with the use of an implant. Mastopexies are required when the tissues have become lax and weighted. Uplifting is then required to give the breast a more youthful fullness and appearance.

Most insurance companies will cover removal of the implant but will not cover the mastopexy portion of the procedure.

Your satisfaction with a breast lift is likely to be greater if you understand the procedure thoroughly and if your expectations are realistic. A breast lift can enhance your breast appearance. A personal consultation is the best way to get the information you need. Together, we will discuss your options, and choose what is best for you, given your personal situation.
