Implant RevisionAbout implant revisionsFDA Investigation of silicone breast implants started with Connie Chung's report in 1992 and resulted in a prolonged look into breast implants. Over the next eight years it became obvious that breast implants do not cause a particular disease. However, it was concluded that breast implants are not lifetime devices and a revision procedure would be needed at some point in the future.
Close to two million women have breast implants in the United States. Most implants will need to be removed and a breast revision surgery performed with replacement implants, mastopexies or some other revision procedure. Breast implants, which are over ten years old, need to be monitored with mammograms, sonograms, and MRI studies. If found to be ruptured, breast implants will need to be revised with removal or replacement procedures. If a medical problem occurs with the breast as a result of implant placement, such as rupture, capsular contracture, or displacement of the prosthesis, most insurance companies will cover the cost of the implant removal. Replacement procedures with implants and mastopexies however, are usually the responsibility of the patient. Please click on the link below to view before and after pictures.
